Alaska Smokejumpers Film & Video Collection

View Alaska Smokejumpers on YouTubeFootage from films and videos that show Alaska Smokejumpers training and fighting Alaska wildfires has been digitized by the Alaska Film Archives at the Elmer E. Rasmuson Library. Scenes dating back to the 1960s depict smokejumpers parachuting from airplanes, clearing firelines, watching as airplanes drop fire retardant, and battling massive wildfires.

The collection consists of 179 film and video items, all of which may be viewed by checking out DVDs from the media desk at the library. A representative sample of the footage is available online at the Alaska Film Archives You Tube channel.

Although original media items were returned to the Alaska Smokejumpers due to rules governing their organization, the footage itself has been donated to the university. DVD and digital copies of the footage will be held and maintained by the Alaska Film Archives for current and future use and study by all.

Located in UAF’s Elmer E. Rasmuson Library, the Alaska Film Archives is a unit of the Alaska and Polar Regions Collections & Archives (APRCA).
